If I Had Tarried
If I had not seen the things of God, I would have perished with you,
If I had not hearkened to his words, I would not be true.
If faith and light had not awakened me to love,
I would have tarried with you and not known God above.
If I had not desired new life, my sins would still be mine,
If I had not chosen repentance, I would have chosen deaths design.
If I had not gone to the wilderness, I would not know my King,
If had not chosen this path, I would have no song to sing.
So it is that I now travel and He is guiding me,
I cherish every step and the beauty of His tree.
My words will rise amid every trouble and test,
To praise my Redeemer for I know that I am blest.
The goodness of my God is the truth I understand,
My journey through this wilderness is the gift that he planned.
I will press on with faith and my song will be heard,
I love my dear Redeemer and rejoice in his pure word!
He is mightier than 50, yea he is mightier than all,
For he alone has rescued me and saved me from my fall!
The lowest place of sorrows is not greater than he,
My Redeemer descended below all that I may be free!
How glorious the miracle of my awakening return,
Now I know the beauty for which all the righteous yearn.
Peace the peace of belonging, the hope of going home,
I'm so grateful I didn't tarry for I treasure all I've known.
Every burden holds its lesson, every pain refines me to,
My song will be as Nephi, as God commands so I will do!
I will follow my Redeemer and by so doing know true joy,
The peace of pure love which no man can destroy!

1 Nephi 5:4-5
"And it had come to pass that my father spake unto her, saying: I know that I am a visionary man; for if I had not seen the things of God in a vision I should not have known the goodness of God, but had tarried at Jerusalem, and had perished with my brethren. But behold, I have obtained a land of promise, in the which things I do rejoice."
1 Nephi 4:1-3
"And it came to pass that I spake unto my brethren, saying: Let us go up again unto Jerusalem, and let us be faithful in keeping the commandments of the Lord; for behold he is mightier than all the earth, then why not mightier than Laban and his fifty, yea, or even than his tens of thousands? Therefore let us go up; let us be strong like unto Moses; for he truly spake unto the waters of the Red Sea and they divided hither and thither, and our fathers came through, out of captivity, on dry ground, and the armies of Pharaoh did follow and were drowned in the waters of the Red Sea. Now behold ye know that this is true; and ye also know that an angel hath spoken unto you; wherefore can ye doubt? Let us go up; the Lord is able to deliver us, even as our fathers, and to destroy Laban, even as the Egyptians."
I Nephi 3:7
"And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them."
