When Destruction Falls

Who remained when destruction fell?
Who lived and who were brought to hell?
Who could see the light of God?
Who chose to stay and hold the rod?

Who heard the Father proclaim His Son?
Who witnessed what through Christ was won?
Who in misery and anguish cried?
Who stood by God and felt His side?

O man do you know the way?
Will you reject; or abide the day?
Those who stayed when Christ shone,
Had followed well, their faith known,

We cannot think to turn to sin,
To rebel and somehow gain a win.
Cities sunk, burned and gone,
Do you see what went wrong?

Deceived, deluded by the enemy,
Many chose darkness and captivity.
Samuel warned and testified,
Yet many claimed he had lied.

What then when truth held them bound?
A prison of weeping their aching sound.
See the warning and heed this call,
Those who choose evil, will surely fall.

Be wise my brother repent and turn,
For soon in glory God will return.
May mercy claim your heart made new,
May peace not vengeance call for you.

Quoting Elder Hales: “When we choose to have faith, we are prepared to stand in the presence of God. … After the Savior’s Crucifixion, He appeared only to those ‘who had been faithful in the testimony of Him while they lived in mortality. Those ‘who rejected the testimonies … of the … prophets [could not] behold [the Savior’s] presence, nor look upon his face. Our faith prepares us to be in the presence of the Lord.”

The words of Robert D. Hales inspired me to read once again from 3 Nephi chapters 8-11.https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/3-ne/8?lang=eng  I was touched as I thought of the parting words of this dear apostle of God.  I fellt the truth of his testimony as I studied the witness of the appearance of Jesus Christ in America following His resurrection.  As I pondered the words of this great apostle and those recorded in the Book of Mormon, I was inspired to write the poem, When Destruction Falls.  We each have a choice to make and our choice will determine if we stand and stay, or if we like so many of the Nephites and Lamanites will be destroyed at His coming.

We cannot ignore the justice of God.  We cannot think to defy His commandments and abide His presence.  He is holy even the Lord God Omnipotent.  To remain with Him at the great millennial day requires that we repent and turn to Him with full purpose of heart.  I testify that Jesus did atone for the sins of all mankind in the Garden of Gethsemane.  He gave his life on the cross at Calvary.  He suffered for us that we might not suffer and be lost.

But being saved is on condition of repentance and obedience to His commandments.  If we refuse to follow our King and continue in sin and rebellion we will face His justice and wrath.  In the Doctrine and Covenants we read, "Wherefore, I command you to repent, and keep the commandments which you have received by the hand of my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., in my name; And it is by my almighty power that you have received them; Therefore I command you to repent—repent, lest I smite you by the rod of my mouth, and by my wrath, and by my anger, and your sufferings be sore—how sore you know not, how exquisite you know not, yea, how hard to bear you know not. For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; but if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit."

The words of our Redeemer are a sacred and merciful warning.  I hope each who reads our blog will heed His warning.  To delay repentance is Satan’s strategy.  In 1 Thessalonians we read, “ For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night. For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.”  Brothers and sisters, it is foolishness to procrastinate repenting and turning to God; today is the day to repent and follow our King.  The doors to the chapel are open, all are welcome.  I pray that any who have left the straight and narrow path will return and feel the healing of their Savior.  I myself have repented and felt the healing touch of the Master’s hand.  Where once there was regret and pain, there is now hope, beauty and light.

My heart is changed forever and I seek for the light of God and not the things of the world.  I am truly happy because of the atoning sacrifice of my Savior Jesus Christ.  He has breathed new life into me. I testify He offers this peace to all.  Will you embrace His gift?  Will you choose joy or misery?  Will you be among those who stay and enjoy the sacred privilege of living on the earth with Jesus Christ at the millennial day?

I have included the lyrics to this beautiful hymn written by Edward Partridge! Enjoy!

1. Let Zion in her beauty rise;
Her light begins to shine.
Ere long her King will rend the skies,
Majestic and divine,
The gospel spreading thru the land,
A people to prepare
To meet the Lord and Enoch’s band
Triumphant in the air.

2. Ye heralds, sound the golden trump
To earth’s remotest bound.
Go spread the news from pole to pole
In all the nations round:
That Jesus in the clouds above,
With hosts of angels too,
Will soon appear, his Saints to save,
His enemies subdue.

3. That glorious rest will then commence
Which prophets did foretell,
When Saints will reign with Christ on earth,
And in his presence dwell
A thousand years, oh, glorious day!
Dear Lord, prepare my heart
To stand with thee on Zion’s mount
And nevermore to part.

"And, if you sense that one day every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is the Lord, why not do so now? For in the coming of that collective confession, it will mean much less to kneel down when it is no longer possible to stand up!" Neal A. Maxwell
